Does Lady Gaga have the most pretentious tattoo ever?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

It was only so long that another celebrity would indulge in a philosophical (in other words meaningless) tattoo. We all admired, loathed or giggled at Victoria Beckham’s gushy “I am my beloved, my beloved is mine” tat; testament to her love for spouse, David, earlier this year.

This was, if you remember, stenciled on the back of Posh’s neck, so this was also testament to the fact Beck’s was constantly following his wife everywhere they went and would always be reminded of her beautiful admission. Maybe not…

So, it was no surprise here in the Tattoo Fashion office when the flamboyant Lady Gaga, who recently had the video of her new song ‘Lovegame’ banned due to it being too raunchy, has hit the headlines again after getting a new piece of body art.

Not be outdone by the ex-Spice Girl, Lady Gaga now has her very own profound statement inked on her body, but hers being approximately four times longer! The curling script tattoo, which is on the inside of her left arm, reads: “In the deepest hour of the night, confess to yourself that you would die if you were forbidden to write. And look deep into your heart where it spreads its roots, the answer, and ask yourself, must I write? The quote is from her favourite philosopher and poet Rainer Maria Rilke and inspired her visit to a tattoo parlour whilst on tour in Japan recently.

We have to admit we love the quote and we’re sure that Ms Gaga will continue to write without many casualties along the way….!

Should you hide tattoos on your wedding day?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

A debate is raging around the Tattoo Fashion office presently: should you cover up your tattoos on your big day? The office is divided into two distinct, almost hostile camps, with both sides refusing to settle for a compromise.

Some believe that it’s your day, shared with friends and family, who love you just the way you are, and are all too familiar with your body motifs. Others, however, think that this is the time when your tattoos should be masqueraded, for the benefit of cameras, memories and the elderly.

The beauty about this insatiable debate is that there’s simply no right or wrong answer. The subjectivity of such an argument will burn a lot longer than the candles in the honeymoon suite, so which side does your view lay?

Up until the last 50 or so years, the combination of women and tattoos was more condemned than divorce, and was unthinkable for any respectable woman to sport such permanent markings. Unless you inhabited a remote part of the Mindoro rain forest, tattoos were synonymous with ancient tribes, sailors and Hells Angles.

Fortunately for women today, the modern world has opened its eyes, evolved, and altered its regime accordingly, with as many women now introducing tattoos to their anatomy as men. So, what’s all the fuss about then? A valid question and one that is still resonating loud and far around our office. In the argument of whether a bride should hide or display her wonderful array of body designs, surely it’s down to one very simple thing: choice?

The majority, if not all, of your guests may even find it strange and alien for you to cover up what is clearly part of your personality, so (like above) highlighting your assets (er, your tats we mean) will inevitably make you look even more striking and stunning when you grace the aisle. If you have concerns about Granny or Grandad then the chances are they won’t be able to see you properly anyway, and are probably more focused on their dietary options come the evening. Be prepared for some shocked faces though….
